How Lawyers and Professional Visitors Can Visit Inmates at Richmond County Jail

Professional visits at Richmond County Jail (Richmond County Detention Center) are doable, but plan ahead. The two big keys: give at least 24 hours notice and aim for the least restrictive weekday window.

Whether you're scheduling a lawyer visit or another type of professional visit, the Richmond County Detention Center needs your request at least 24 hours in advance. That lead time helps the jail accommodate professional consults and prevents avoidable delays when you show up.

  • Fax your request to (910) 997-8262
  • Email your request to jailofficer@richmondnc.com

The least restrictive window for professional visits is Monday through Friday, 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Scheduling within that timeframe means fewer conflicts with day-to-day facility operations.

Need a professional visit outside that normal timeframe? You'll need authorization from the Jail Administrator. Send your request through the jail's listed fax or email method so it can be routed for approval.

If you're a paraprofessional aide visiting without the inmate's attorney present, bring a signed authorization letter from the attorney. The jail requires this letter to be on the attorney's official letterhead. It needs to include the inmate's name, the court jurisdiction, the case number, the full name of each person authorized to visit, and the attorney's signature. Having all of that on the letter helps staff confirm you're approved to meet with the inmate for that case.

Remember: Paraprofessionals must present the signed attorney authorization at every visit. Bring a current copy each time, even if you've been before.

  1. Log your arrival: All professional visitors must record their arrival when entering the facility.
  2. Log your departure: Before you leave, you must also record your departure from the facility.

Item handling is strict. Professional visitors cannot give an inmate anything that would stay after the visit unless a detention officer has given expressed permission. If you need paperwork or tools during the consult, plan to keep them with you or get clear permission before leaving anything behind.

  • You may temporarily “loan” an item for the visit (for example, an ink pen so the inmate can sign a document).
  • You must retrieve the pen or any other loaned item from the inmate before the visit ends.

Warning: No recording devices of any kind are allowed inside the Richmond County Detention Center unless you have prior approval from the Jail Administrator.
