West County Detention Facility is located at 5555 Giant Highway, Richmond, CA 94806. The main phone number is (510) 262-4200.

Monday through Thursday, visiting blocks start at 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. Pick one and plan your day around it - showing up between blocks won't work.

Arrival cutoff: You must be at the facility no later than 30 minutes before the end of any visiting block.

Here's something that catches people off guard: the inmate schedules social visits, not you. If your loved one hasn't set it up, you'll be turned away - even if you drove an hour to get there. Confirm with them before you go.

  1. Have the inmate notify staff - Inmates are responsible for notifying the supervising Deputy Sheriff and reporting to the visiting area 15 minutes prior to the visit.
  2. Arrive before the cutoff - Visitors must be at the facility no later than 30 minutes before the end of the visiting block.

Keep your group to three people or fewer. That's the limit for visiting an inmate at one time. If more family members want to come, plan separate visits rather than trying to swap people in at the last minute.

Previsit Checklist

  • Pick a Monday–Thursday visiting block time (7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., or 2:00 p.m.).
  • Confirm the inmate scheduled the social visit.
  • Plan to arrive so you’re at the facility no later than 30 minutes before the end of the visiting block.
  • Make sure your group is no more than three visitors for that inmate.
  • Follow the facility’s visiting regulations so your visit doesn’t get canceled.

Break the visiting rules and your visit gets canceled. That includes missing the arrival cutoff, showing up without a scheduled visit, or failing to meet any of the facility's requirements for that day.

Visiting privileges can be suspended, but this doesn't happen casually. Only the Facility Commander can suspend privileges - unless it's part of a formal disciplinary proceeding.

Schedules change, especially around holidays. Before you make the trip, call the facility at (510) 262-4200 or check the Sheriff's website to confirm current visiting details.
