What You Can't Bring to Ridgeland: Banned Items and What to Expect at Screening
Screening keeps everyone safe, but the wrong items in your pocket can get you turned away. Here's what SCDC bans, what trips visitors up most often, and what to expect when you arrive.
SCDC bans all personal devices that communicate wirelessly. Phones are the obvious one, but the rule also covers smartwatches and fitness trackers - anything with Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, or cellular capability. This policy has been in effect since February 1, 2016.
Reminder: Leave your smartwatch and fitness tracker at home or locked in your car. Wearing one to the entrance will get you turned away at screening.
If you're 18 or older, expect a pat/frisk search at Level II and Level III institutions. SCDC policy (effective September 4, 2015) requires this on top of other screening procedures. Female visitors will be searched by female staff only.
What this means for you: Arrive with a little extra time and follow staff instructions. The process is routine - being prepared helps the line move faster for everyone.
SCDC is tobacco-free. Since January 1, 2008, tobacco products have been treated as contraband on agency property - that includes cigarettes, vapes, lighters, matches, and any related paraphernalia. Leave them all behind.
Avoid a preventable problem: Don't bring tobacco, vapes, or lighters onto the property. If you're carrying permitted items, make sure nothing tobacco-related is mixed in.
