Getting on the visitor list starts with the inmate—they need to add you and send you a Visitor Information form. Complete and return the BP‑A0629 visitor questionnaire/release to the institution. This form authorizes the warden to run criminal background checks and includes warnings about federal penalties for false statements. Before you travel, call Rivers CI at 603‑342‑4000 to confirm the schedule. Visits typically happen on weekends and holidays, but the warden can limit visiting times or cap the number and length of visits to prevent overcrowding. By entering Bureau grounds, you consent to searches. Prohibited items—weapons, explosives, drugs, cameras, telephones, radios, and pagers—will get you turned away. Brief, appropriate contact is usually allowed at the start and end of visits. Conjugal visits aren't permitted.

Rivers CI uses the TRULINCS electronic messaging system. Messages are text-only—no attachments—and capped at 13,000 characters each. Every message gets screened. Both the inmate and anyone they communicate with must consent to monitoring before the system can be used. The inmate needs approval to access TRULINCS, and each outside contact must grant permission before messaging begins. To get started, create an account with the facility's approved communications vendor, then use their portal or app to complete setup and handle scheduling or payments.

Mail at Rivers CI falls into two categories: general and special written correspondence. General mail gets opened and inspected. Special incoming mail marked as such can only be opened with the inmate present. Packages from home aren't allowed without prior written approval—exceptions are typically limited to release clothing and authorized medical devices. Don't assume you can mail money or packages to the facility's street address. Some systems route funds through a central processing center, and package rules vary by facility and approved vendors. Many North Carolina facilities use offsite mail-scan vendors for non-legal letters and documents. Follow the vendor's addressing and submission rules, and expect scanned delivery—originals are kept only briefly.

Don't mail money to Rivers Correctional Institution's street address—mailed funds must go to a central processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. Once received, the money goes into the inmate's commissary account for purchases and other approved debits. For faster deposits, Rivers CI accepts MoneyGram's ExpressPayment Program. Transactions are received and processed seven days a week. Enter the account number as the inmate's eight-digit register number immediately followed by their last name, and use Receive Code 7932. Transfers sent between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST typically post within 2–4 hours. After 9:00 p.m. EST, they post at 7:00 a.m. EST the next morning. Keep in mind that sending funds creates BOP financial records tied to your personal information, so enter the inmate's booked name and ID exactly as shown.
