How to Send Mail to an Inmate at Rogers County Jail (and What Gets Rejected)
To get your letter accepted at Rogers County Jail, address it with the inmate's first and last name, plus their name number if you have it. On its own line, write "C/O Amos G. Ward Detention Center." The mailing address is: 114 S Missouri Ave., Claremore, OK 74017.
Rogers County Jail is strict about what kinds of personal mail it accepts. Unless your mail is legal, religious, or official, it needs to be one of these: a regular letter, an approved greeting card, a plain white postcard, or a postcard with approved images. Stick to those formats and you'll avoid most "returned to sender" headaches.
Greeting card warning: Skip cards with embossing, electronics, or anything oversized. Those are prohibited and will get your mail sent back.
- ✓ Use plain/white envelopes only. Colored envelopes are not allowed.
Keep letters to four pages of paper or fewer. If you have a longer update, split it across multiple letters rather than stuffing one thick envelope.
- ✓ Limit photos to what the jail allows: inmates can have up to three photographs in their cell.
- ✓ Keep photo size to 4×6 or smaller.
- ✓ Do not send Polaroid-style photos.
- ✓ Avoid sending pictures in multiple letters. Multiple letters with pictures will be returned.
Postcards need to be clean and unaltered. Any postcard that's been defaced or tampered with will be rejected.
- ✓ Do not use paint, crayon, or marker anywhere on the mail. Only black ink or pencil is allowed.
- ✓ Do not include stickers.
- ✓ Do not send anything with watermarks or stains.
- ✓ Do not add glitter.
- ✓ Do not use lipstick or perfume on the letter or envelope (listed as a biohazard).
- ✓ Do not send collages of pictures.
Content matters, too. Mail cannot include nudity, weapons references, or gang references, even if it's meant as a joke or part of a story.
Legal mail gets different treatment. Incoming legal mail is delivered to the inmate and opened in their presence. Staff can inspect it, but they won't read it unless there's reasonable suspicion the legal mail privilege is being abused and jail administration authorizes a review.
- Hand outgoing legal mail directly to staff: do not just drop it like regular mail.
- Have it inspected in the inmate’s presence: staff reviews it while the inmate is there.
- Seal it after inspection: the mail is returned to the inmate so they can seal it.
- Return it to staff immediately: once sealed, it goes right back to staff for collection.
