Phone Call Rules for TDCJ Inmates — What Roy K. Robb Families Should Know
Phone calls are often the quickest way to stay connected, but TDCJ has specific rules about timing, approved numbers, and what you're agreeing to as the registered phone owner. Here's what Roy K. Robb families need to know before waiting by the phone—or troubleshooting a calling problem.
Inmate phones are generally available from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. That window can shift if conditions require it, and tablet phone hours may differ. If you're expecting a call, stay flexible on timing rather than banking on one exact hour each day.
Each call is capped at 30 minutes. You’ll hear a warning message one minute before the call disconnects, which is your cue to wrap up and share any last details before the line cuts off.
Allowed Numbers
- ✓ Allowed: home landline telephone numbers
- ✓ Allowed: post-paid cell phones
- ✓ Allowed: pre-paid cell phones
- ✓ Not allowed: internet services
- ✓ Not allowed: 800 numbers
- ✓ Not allowed: businesses
- ✓ Not allowed: pay phones
- ✓ Not allowed: international numbers
Assume every call is monitored and recorded. The exception: calls to the attorney of record, which are handled differently.
Registration Name Match
- ✓ You must confirm you’re the registered owner of the telephone number.
- ✓ You must agree to allow the inmate to call that number.
- ✓ You must be at least 18 years old.
- ✓ The name on your driver license or state ID must match the name shown on the phone listing or bill.
Once your number is set up to receive calls, there are rules on your end too. You can't forward the call, add another person through three-way calling, or put the call on speakerphone while talking with the inmate.
