5 Ways to Send Money to an Inmate (and Which Option the TDCJ Calls Free)

The best deposit method depends on how you're paying and how often you plan to send money. Your options: mail a money order or cashier's check, set up automatic monthly withdrawals from your checking account (ACH), pay by card through JPay or eCommDirect, or make a cash deposit through MoneyGram. Want something hands-off? ACH pulls automatically each month. Prefer paying by card online or by phone? JPay and eCommDirect handle that (with fees). Paying cash in person? MoneyGram is your route.

5 Ways to Send Money to an Inmate (and Which Option the TDCJ Calls Free)

Sending a money order or cashier's check? The payee line matters. Make it payable to:

  1. Get a deposit slip - You can get deposit slips from the offender, or you can request them by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Inmate Trust Fund, PO Box 60, Huntsville, TX 77342-0060.
  2. Fill out the deposit slip - Complete the slip with the offender’s information so the funds go to the right account.
  3. Mail the deposit - Send the money order or cashier’s check along with the completed deposit slip to: Inmate Trust Fund, PO Box 60, Huntsville, TX 77342-0060.

The option TDCJ calls free is the monthly checking account debit (ACH). It pulls a set amount from your checking account once a month and deposits it to a specific offender. To set it up: complete the ACH authorization form, attach a voided check from the account that will be debited, and mail both to: Inmate Trust Fund, PO Box 629, Huntsville, TX 77342-0629.

ACH timing runs on a monthly cycle. TDCJ pulls the money from your account on or around the 5th, and credits the offender's account on or around the 10th.

JPay handles card-based deposits. You can send funds with a Visa or MasterCard credit/debit card - online or by phone. A service fee applies. The JPay deposit line is 1.800.574.5729.

Paying with cash? TDCJ points to MoneyGram. Head to a MoneyGram location with an Express Payment form and use RECEIVE CODE 3570.

eCommDirect is the online deposit option through Texas.gov. It accepts Visa, MasterCard, or Discover, and a service fee applies.
