What Is a Halfway House? Understanding Residential Reentry Centers (RRCs) for RRM SAN ANTONIO Families
As your loved one gets closer to release, you might hear terms like
In the federal system,
The goal is transition. Rather than going from prison to full independence overnight, an RRC provides a structured place to live while your loved one rebuilds routines, reconnects with the community, and gets practical reentry support.
RRCs are safe, structured, and supervised. The focus is on real-world stability: finding work, managing money, and building the daily habits that make it easier to succeed after release.
- ✓ Employment counseling
- ✓ Job placement support
- ✓ Financial management assistance
- ✓ Other reentry programs and services offered through the RRC
RRC placement is part of release planning - not a last-minute decision. The BOP typically makes an RRC referral recommendation about 17–19 months before release during a scheduled program review meeting. Placement length varies by person, but the maximum possible RRC stay is up to 12 months.
The recommendation comes from your loved one's unit team - at minimum, the unit manager, case manager, and counselor. Questions about a specific person's RRC placement, timing, or next steps? Direct them to the unit team at the institution where your loved one is currently confined.
Note: For security reasons, the BOP does not release information about an individual inmate’s designation to an RRC or their transfer status.
Once someone arrives at an RRC, the BOP inmate locator will show the designated facility - but not the actual address. Instead, it lists only the Residential Reentry Management (RRM) office responsible for that person.
- Check the BOP inmate locator - After your loved one arrives at an RRC, the locator can show the designated facility and the responsible RRM office (not the RRC’s address).
- Start with the unit team at the current institution - Questions about an individual person’s RRC placement should go to the unit team where your loved one is confined.
- Ask for clarity on what you can expect to be shared - Since public details are limited, the most useful updates usually come through your loved one and the unit team’s process.
Reminder: Even after someone is placed, public tools won’t provide an RRC street address, and the BOP won’t release individual designation or transfer-status details for security reasons.
