Bringing Children to Visit at Salem Correctional Facility (WV): Rules for Parents, Guardians, and Other Family Members

The key rule for children under 18 comes down to legal responsibility. You can only apply for a child on the visiting form if you're their parent or legal guardian - and you'll need proof. Not the parent or guardian? You'll need a notarized permission slip from someone who is.

Important: The child’s parent or legal guardian must already be on the offender’s approved visiting list before anyone else is allowed to bring the child into the complex.

The form is strict: you can only apply for a minor if you can prove you're the parent or legal guardian. Since the form doesn't list which documents count as proof, call ahead to confirm what they'll accept before submitting your request or planning a visit.

Grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, family friends - anyone who isn't the child's parent or legal guardian - must have a notarized permission slip to bring a child into the facility. Show up without it, and the visit can be denied at the door.

Plan ahead: Even when you follow the child-permission rules, the parent/legal guardian still must be on the offender’s approved visiting list first - and the Superintendent can deny a visit even if a background check has been approved.
