How to Address Mail to Salem County Jail Correctly (so it doesn't get returned)

Mail gets returned or destroyed for small labeling mistakes. Use the checklist below, and double-check the jail's street address before sending anything.

Start with the basics: Salem County Jail requires the inmate's full name on every piece of mail. Missing or incomplete names mean your letter could be returned before it ever reaches your loved one.

  • Your full name (sender)
  • Your return address (clear and complete)
  • Mail that is not correctly addressed can be sent back to you
  • If sender information is not available, the mail can be destroyed

Note: All incoming mail is searched and inspected when it arrives at the facility.

One published address lists Salem County Jail at 125 Cemetery Road, Woodstown, NJ 08098.

However, a separate Salem County document (a registration form PDF) shows a different street number: 135 Cemetery Road, Woodstown, NJ 08098.

Verify first: Because the street address appears in two different forms, confirm the current correct address with the facility before mailing anything time-sensitive or sending packages.

Packages Books Rules

  • Put the recipient’s name on the package
  • Put a return address on the package
  • Make sure both are clearly written in the appropriate location, or the package is not accepted

Expect everything you mail to be opened and checked. Salem County Jail searches and inspects all incoming packages.

Follow the vendor rule exactly for reading materials. The only items permitted through the mail are legal materials and books, magazines, and newspapers from Barnes & Noble. These must be ordered from barnesandnoble.com and shipped directly from Barnes & Noble.

Don't skip the return address: Without a clear return address, mail can be destroyed. Packages that aren't labeled correctly won't be accepted.

Not sure how to address something or whether an item is allowed? Call 856-769-4300 and select option 1. A separate facility document also lists 856-769-3500 ext. 4119 and a fax number of 856-769-4229. If you reach the wrong place, ask to be routed to the mail staff.
