Mailing Books to Salem County Jail: Why Only Barnes & Noble Works
Salem County Jail has strict rules about publications. If you want a book, magazine, or newspaper to actually reach your loved one, it must come directly from Barnes & Noble.
Salem County Jail only accepts books, magazines, and newspapers by mail if they ship directly from Barnes & Noble. You need to place the order through Barnes & Noble's website, and the item must ship straight from them to the jail. Buying elsewhere, shipping it yourself, or forwarding from another address won't work. The facility will reject anything that doesn't meet this rule.
Note: Jail administration can deny any publication if it is considered inappropriate or if it may jeopardize the safety and security of the facility.
When placing your order, use the facility address exactly: 125 Cemetery Road, Woodstown, NJ 08098. Have questions before spending money, or need to follow up on a rejected item? Call 856-769-4300 and select option 1 to ask about mail rules.
Rejected Content
- ✓ Publications or correspondence with information about explosives
- ✓ Publications or correspondence with information about weapons
- ✓ Publications or correspondence with information about controlled dangerous substances
- ✓ Publications or correspondence with information about escape plans
- ✓ Publications or correspondence with information about lock picking or locking devices
Even if a book or magazine doesn't fall into one of the categories above, it can still be denied. Administration has final say and can reject anything they consider inappropriate or a safety or security risk.
- Pick the book, magazine, or newspaper on Barnes & Noble’s website. Salem County Jail only accepts these items when they are sourced through Barnes & Noble.
- Confirm it ships directly from Barnes & Noble. The shipment needs to originate with Barnes & Noble, not from you or a third-party shipper.
- Enter the incarcerated person’s full name and the jail’s address for delivery. Use the complete facility address so mail staff can route it correctly when it arrives.
- ✓ Write the incarcerated person’s full name
- ✓ Include the sender’s full name
- ✓ Include a complete return address (packages without a name and return address in the proper place are not accepted)
Everything that comes in gets checked. Salem County Jail searches and inspects all incoming mail and packages. If you send a letter containing something prohibited, the jail returns the entire letter to the sender, not just the problem item.
Warning: If your mail does not include sender information, it will be destroyed.
Books and other publications can also be denied based on content. Even when you order the right way, administration may still refuse delivery if they decide the material is inappropriate or could jeopardize facility safety and security.
