5 Things to Know Before Your First Personal Visit at Salem County Jail

Personal visits aren't available right away. At Salem County Jail, an inmate must be incarcerated for 90 days before they're eligible.

After that 90-day mark, visits are still limited - inmates get one personal visit per month. Coordinate your timing carefully. Miss a month and you could be waiting longer than expected.

Note: Eligibility can be affected by an inmate’s status or recent issues inside the facility. If you’re being told a visit can’t be scheduled, ask what’s preventing it so you know what to plan for next.

Personal visits run about 40 minutes. Come prepared with the updates or questions you want to cover - the time goes fast.

Appointments fill up quickly. The jail books five visits per 40-minute slot, first-come, first-served. Call late and your preferred time may already be gone.

Before worrying about time slots, confirm you're on the list. All visitors - including children - must be on the inmate's authorized visitation list.

Personal visits are scheduled by phone. Call 856-769-4300 ext. 7790 on the Wednesday night before the inmate's designated weekend (Saturday or Sunday).

Don’t miss the window: Calls to schedule are accepted only on Wednesday night between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

The system is first-come, first-served - appointments go in the order calls are received. With only five slots per time block, calling early on Wednesday gives you the best chance of getting your preferred time.

If you're bringing a baby: Breastfeeding and diaper changing aren't allowed during the visit. If you leave to tend to your child, you forfeit the rest of your visiting time.

Entry and Belongings

  • Confirm you (and any children coming with you) are on the inmate’s authorized visitation list before you go.

Leave your phone behind: No cell phones are permitted inside the building - leave them in your vehicle.

Got personal items you can't bring into the visiting area? The lobby has lockers available for $0.25. Bring a quarter - it'll save you a trip back to the car.
