How the Visitor Approval Process Works at Sampson Correctional Institution
Getting approved to visit requires some paperwork, but the process is straightforward once you understand how applications work and what limits apply.
At Sampson Correctional Institution, the incarcerated person kicks off the process. They'll get blank visitor application forms from the facility and pass them along to anyone who wants to visit.
You can't visit until your application is completed and approved by facility staff. That approval has to happen first - so if you're planning a first visit, give yourself time for processing before trying to show up.
There's a hard cap on approved visitors. Each incarcerated person can have a maximum of 18 visitor applications, meaning no more than 18 approved visitors on their list at any given time.
Note: If you’re trying to coordinate visits among a large family or friend group, that 18-person maximum still applies to the approved names on file.
Clergy follow a separate track. They must complete a DC-949P application and receive approval before visiting, but they don't count against the 18-person limit.
Practical Tips for Applicants
- ✓ Ask your loved one at the facility for a blank visitor application form (they’re the one who has to obtain it from the facility).
- ✓ Fill out the application completely and clearly so it can be reviewed without delays.
- ✓ Don’t plan a trip until you’ve been approved - visits can’t happen until facility staff approves the completed application.
