What to Expect at the Entrance: Pat/Frisk, Metal Detectors, Prohibited Items, and Dress Code at Sampson
Walking into a facility for a visit can feel stressful—especially the first time. Knowing what entrance screening looks like and what might get you turned away helps you show up prepared with fewer surprises.
At Sampson, visitors age 16 and older go through a search before entering. This includes a pat/frisk and screening with an electronic device. Staff use the least intrusive methods possible while still keeping the facility secure.
You'll also pass through a metal detector. Think airport-style security - you clear the checkpoint before moving on to the visiting area.
Note: These searches are part of the facility’s effort to prevent contraband. If you refuse the pat/frisk, electronic screening, or metal detector process, you won’t be allowed to enter.
Prohibited Devices
- ✓ Cell phones
- ✓ Smartwatches
- ✓ Cameras
- ✓ Recording devices
- ✓ Smart/AI glasses
Cell phones are contraband. Leave yours in the car - even keeping it in your pocket "until you get inside" can end your visit before it starts.
Keep your outfit simple and conservative. Shirts and shoes are required for entry, and staff can turn you away if you don’t meet the dress code.
- ✓ If you wear Bermuda-length shorts, they can’t be more than three inches above the kneecap.
- ✓ Dresses and skirts can’t be more than three inches above the kneecap.
Refuse the search procedures, and you won't get in. If you're unsure what to expect during screening, ask a staff member before you start - it's better than refusing and losing the visit.
- Do a pocket-and-wrist check before you leave home - make sure your phone and any smartwatch or wearable is not coming with you.
- Leave prohibited devices somewhere safe before you approach the entrance - don’t carry cameras, recording devices, or smart/AI glasses onto facility property for your visit.
- Bring only what you need to get through screening - fewer items means fewer delays at the metal detector and less risk of being turned away.
