Before Your First Visit to San Joaquin Jail: A 1‑Page Checklist for Families

At-a-glance

  • Sign up at least 30 minutes before the next available visit (first-come, first-served).
  • Keep your group to 3 people max per visit - this count includes children and babies.
  • Plan for a strict 45-minute visit (no exceptions).
  • Don’t overstay - it can cost you visiting privileges.
  • Once your visit starts, don’t exit the visiting room or the visit will be terminated.
  • Remember the limits: 2 visits per week (Monday–Sunday), and only 1 visit per day even if you go to a different San Joaquin County Jail location.
  • Leave your phone behind - cellular phones are prohibited in visiting.
  • No photos during visits.

Sign up at least one half hour before the next available visit. It's first-come, first-served, and spots fill up once all rooms are reserved. Arriving early gives you the best shot at getting in.

  • Keep your visiting group to a maximum of three people per visit (this includes children and babies).
  • If you’re bringing anyone under 18, they can only visit when accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
  • Bring the minor’s ORIGINAL birth certificate from the county where they were born for each visit.
  • If you’re the legal guardian (not the parent), bring the ORIGINAL court order for each visit you accompany.

Each visit lasts exactly 45 minutes - no extensions. Know that going in so you can make the most of your time together.

Heads up: Overstaying can cost you future visit privileges. And if you leave the visiting room once your visit starts, it ends right there.

Each inmate gets two visits per week (Monday through Sunday). As a visitor, you're limited to one visit per day - even if you try a different location within San Joaquin County Jail. Plan accordingly.

Eligibility Restrictions

  • If you were previously an inmate at San Joaquin County Jail, you must wait a minimum of 30 days before visiting.
  • If you were previously convicted of a felony or you’re currently on AWP, you may not visit without prior authorization from the facility manager.
  • If you’re on active parole or wearing an ankle monitor, check with your parole/probation officer before visiting.

Prohibitions and Dress

  • No photos may be taken during visits.
  • Cellular phones are prohibited in visiting areas.

Dress conservatively. Officers have final say on whether your outfit passes. Skip anything sexually suggestive, sheer, or see-through. Leave sleeveless, strapless, halter, and spaghetti-strap tops at home - same goes for swimsuits and bare-midriff clothing. Undergarments shouldn't be visible, and pajamas or house shoes won't fly either.
