Bringing Children to San Joaquin Jail: Exact Documents You Must Bring for Each Visit

Anyone under 18 can only visit if they're accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Not the parent? You'll need to prove your legal authority to bring the child - more on the exact documents below.

Bringing Children to San Joaquin Jail: Exact Documents You Must Bring for Each Visit

Exact Documents

  • For every visit with a minor: Bring the minor’s original birth certificate issued by the county where the child was born.
  • If you’re the child’s legal guardian (not the parent): Bring the original court order showing guardianship for each visit.

Reminder: San Joaquin Jail requires original documents for minors’ visits (birth certificate and, if applicable, the guardianship court order). Copies aren’t treated the same as originals.

Keep your group small. San Joaquin Jail allows a maximum of three people per visit, and that headcount includes children and babies. If you’re bringing more than one child, you may need to rotate visitors or plan separate visits.

Timing matters too. Sign up at least half an hour before the next available visit - it's first-come, first-serve. With kids in tow, give yourself extra buffer so you're not rushing and risking missing the window.

Visits last 45 minutes, no exceptions. Here's something that catches families off guard: if you exit the visiting room after the visit starts, it's over. Handle bathroom breaks, snacks, and anything else before you go in.

Keep weekly limits in mind. Each inmate gets two visits per week (Monday through Sunday). On the visitor side, you can only visit once per day - even if you're trying to see someone at a different San Joaquin County Jail location. Coordinate carefully if multiple family members want to see the same person.

Prohibitions with Children

  • No photos may be taken during visits.
  • Cellular phones are prohibited in visiting areas.
  • Don’t leave the visiting room once the visit starts - exiting terminates the visit.
