How to Email and Otherwise Deliver Messages to Someone at San Luis Obispo County Jail

Jail staff won't relay messages over the phone or through the reception window. Even if it feels urgent, you can't call and ask someone to pass along a quick note. You'll need to use one of the approved channels instead.

  • Deliver your message during a regular visit
  • Deliver your message through an attorney or bail agent
  • Send your message by mail correspondence

Note: Since staff can't take messages by phone or at the window, plan on using the jail's email-letter process or regular mail when you need to reach someone inside.

Want the fastest option? Email your letter to sh-inmatemail@co.slo.ca.us for same-day delivery. Write your message, attach it in an approved format, and send. Staff can get it to your person that same day - no waiting on postal mail.

Email Attachments and Limits

  • Use an approved attachment format: JPEG, GIF, BMP, PDF, TXT, DOC, or DOCX
  • Don’t send videos or other non-standard file formats - they won’t be accepted
  • No more than 3 emails per sender, per day
  • No more than 6 pages per email

Note: Money orders still need to go through the U.S. Postal Service. Don't try sending them via the email-letter system.

  1. Put your letter into an approved file type - Save it as a PDF/TXT/DOC/DOCX, or scan/photograph pages as JPEG/GIF/BMP.
  2. Keep each email to 6 pages or fewer - If you’re scanning multiple pages, combine them carefully so the total stays within the 6-page limit for that one email.
  3. Split longer letters across multiple emails (up to 3 per day) - If you can’t fit everything into six pages, send the next portion as a second email, staying under the daily limit of three emails per sender.

Tip: Give your attachment a clear file name so staff can easily identify it. Stick to standard formats - videos and other non-standard files won't be accepted.
