Sending Mail to Someone at SCI Greene: Correct Addresses and Rules

Mail for someone at SCI Greene doesn't all go to the prison. Where you send it depends on what you're sending—regular letters, publications, legal mail, or documents needing a signature each have different addresses and rules.

Sending Mail to Someone at SCI Greene: Correct Addresses and Rules

Regular mail - letters, cards, drawings, photos - goes to Smart Communications, Pennsylvania DOC's central mail processor, not directly to SCI Greene. Address it exactly like this: Smart Communications/PA DOC Inmate Name/Inmate Number Institution Name P.O. Box 33028 St. Petersburg, FL 33733

  • Include a full return address with the sender’s first and last name
  • Include the inmate’s full, correct name and inmate number
  • Use 8.5" x 11" paper
  • Do not send mail that is bound or opens like a book

Once your letter arrives, Smart Communications opens it and scans everything (including photos) into an electronic document. The facility mailroom then prints it on 8.5" x 11" paper and delivers it to the inmate. This is why format matters. Anything bound or "book-like" won't work with this process and can get rejected or delayed.

Books, magazines, calendars, and photo books go through a different process. Send publications to the DOC Security Processing Center (SPC) in Bellefonte: Inmate Name, Inmate Number 268 Bricker Road Bellefonte, PA 16823-1667

  • Send publications to the SPC address in Bellefonte (not to Smart Communications)
  • Put the inmate’s name and inmate number on the shipment
  • Don’t try to send book-like items as “general mail” (general correspondence can’t be bound or open like a book)

Legal Mail

  • Full return address
  • Inmate Name/Number
  • Institution
  • Institution Legal Mail Address

Legal mail has extra requirements. The envelope must include an attorney or court control number tied to the law office. For attorneys, you'll also need the weekly secondary authentication number/time code. Missing these details? The mail won't qualify for privileged handling.

  1. Address it to the business office - Mail original transactional documents that require an inmate signature to the institution’s business office.
  2. Use the required attention line - Put: “ATTN: Business Officer – Inmate Name/Inmate Number” on the address.

Use this route for original documents the inmate needs to sign and return. Label the envelope "ATTN: Business Officer – Inmate Name/Inmate Number" so staff can match the paperwork to the right person.

Photos and Originals

  • Include no more than 25 photos per general mailing
  • Photos sent in general mail can’t be returned to the sender

Note: Photos can’t contain obscenity, explicit sexual material, or nudity. Original photos are securely destroyed after 45 days.

Loose photos tucked into regular letters count as general mail. The 25-photo limit applies, they can't be returned, and originals are destroyed after 45 days. Photo books are different - they're considered publications. Send those to the Security Processing Center (SPC) in Bellefonte with the inmate's name and number.
