Understanding the DOC Tablet System at SCI Laurel Highlands: Ordering, Link Units, and the 30-Day Sync

At SCI Laurel Highlands, only the inmate can order a DOC-approved tablet - you can't place the order from outside. They'll purchase it through the DOC commissary system, so they need enough funds in their account to cover the cost.

ViaPath Technologies is the tablet vendor for these DOC-approved devices. Questions about tablet purchases? Their friends-and-family support line is 877-650-4249.

You can't order the tablet directly, but you can send money so your loved one can buy it themselves. Once the funds hit their account, they can use that balance to purchase the tablet through commissary.

Note: To send money for a tablet purchase, you’ll need a JPay account. For purchase-related questions, ViaPath’s friends-and-family support line is 877-650-4249.

“Link units” are the tablet’s spending currency, and one link unit equals one cent. Inmates can use link units to buy things like songs, send email messages, play games, and purchase other DOC-approved tablet items.

DOC tablets have what's called a "mortality timer" - a strict 30-day sync requirement. Your loved one needs to connect the device to a prison kiosk for an update at least once every 30 days. Make this part of the routine. Waiting until the last minute creates problems if the kiosk isn't available.

Warning: Miss the 30-day window and the tablet locks. Sync early and often - don't push up against the deadline.

  1. Keep the tablet after release - The tablet stays with the person when they come home.
  2. Mail the tablet to ViaPath Technologies - It must be sent in so ViaPath can remove the mortality timer, which helps prevent the device from locking after release.
  3. Have ViaPath load the post-release software - ViaPath will also load the software for WiFi and camera functions.
  4. Call if you’re stuck - For questions from family or friends about the process, contact ViaPath at 877-650-4249.
