What to Expect When You Arrive for an In-Person Visit at a Pennsylvania Prison

A first visit goes a lot smoother when you know what happens between the parking lot and the front door. Here's what Pennsylvania DOC expects on visit day, and what staff will check when you arrive.

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections offers both in-person and video visits. For either option, you'll use the Inmate Visitation System (IVS) to schedule or join a visit. If you're planning to go in person, get comfortable with IVS ahead of time. You don't want to be figuring it out at the last minute.

Vehicle Rules

  • Lock your vehicle while you are on prison property.
  • Roll your windows up (or keep them fully closed).
  • Secure any equipment in or on your vehicle, including ladders and toolboxes.

Plan as if your car could be checked. All visitor vehicles are subject to search on prison property, so keep things tidy and properly stored before you head toward the entrance.

At the entry point, expect security screening. Every visitor, regardless of age, is subject to search. Everyone must pass through a metal detector before entering.

Screening doesn't stop at the front door. All visitor vehicles are also subject to search while on prison property. Keep your car locked, windows closed, and any equipment secured while you're inside.

Don't bring someone along to wait in the car or on the grounds if they aren't visiting. There's no waiting area, and anyone who isn't on the visit list must leave the facility grounds.

Warning: Violating visiting regulations can get your visiting privileges suspended. Follow posted rules and staff instructions closely so you don't lose future visits.
