Why There's No Waiting Area at SCI Mercer (And What That Means for You)

SCI Mercer has no waiting area on the grounds. If someone comes with you but isn't visiting, they can't hang out on-site while you go in. Anyone not on the approved visitor list has to leave the property entirely.

Note: Any violation of visiting regulations may result in the suspension of visiting privileges.

The easiest way to avoid issues? Only bring approved visitors onto SCI Mercer property. If someone's just giving you a ride, didn't get approved, or planned to "wait in the car" - they'll need to leave the grounds. No exceptions.

Plan for screening, too. Everyone goes through a metal detector - kids included. If you're visiting with young children or an older adult who needs extra time, factor that in so you're not rushing at the entrance.

Reminder: All visitor vehicles at SCI Mercer are subject to search while on DOC property.

Practical Tips

  • Lock your vehicle while on prison property.
  • Roll windows up/closed while on prison property.
  • Secure equipment in or on your vehicle (for example, ladders and toolboxes).
  • Expect that your vehicle may be searched while you’re on DOC property.
  1. Confirm who is actually visiting - if someone can’t or won’t go inside, don’t bring them onto the grounds expecting them to wait.
  2. Make a plan for non-visitors to leave - anyone who is not visiting must exit the facility grounds.
  3. Follow visiting rules closely - violations can lead to suspended visiting privileges, which can affect future visits.

Tip: Everyone gets searched, including children. Keep what you bring simple and give yourself extra time for screening.
