Sending Money to Someone at SCI Muncy: JPay Options and Transaction Limits
SCI Muncy handles inmate account deposits through JPay, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections' payment vendor. Here's how to send funds, what the limits are, and a few tips to make sure your deposit goes through without issues.
To add money to someone's account at SCI Muncy, you'll go through JPay - the third-party vendor the Pennsylvania DOC uses for all deposits. JPay handles credit card payments and money orders.
Warning: Only use official JPay channels. The DOC warns that scammers target incarcerated people and their families with fake "alternative" payment requests. Never send money to any other individual, website, or email.
The easiest option is depositing online through the JPay website. It works for anyone housed in a Pennsylvania state prison, including SCI Muncy.
You can also fund the account by phone through JPay. The toll-free number is 800-574-5729.
JPay accepts money orders, but you need to mail them to JPay directly - state correctional institutions won't accept them at the facility.
Prefer paying in person? Pennsylvania state prisons have lobby kiosks, and the DOC also allows cash deposits through MoneyGram walk-in locations. The per-transaction limit for cash/walk-in MoneyGram is covered below.
3
- ✓ Credit card deposits: up to $300 per card every 72 hours
- ✓ Money orders: up to $999.99 per money order (you can send multiple money orders at a time)
- ✓ Cash/walk-in MoneyGram transactions: up to $5,000 per transaction
- ✓ Inmate accounts cannot be funded anonymously
If someone is left money in a will, the estate executor must distribute it via a bank check made payable to the inmate. That's a DOC requirement.
- Get a deposit slip - If you’re sending a money order, a deposit slip has to be included. Deposit slips are available in visiting rooms.
- Fill in the inmate’s details - List the inmate ID number and the inmate’s name.
- Add your sender information - Include your name and your address on the deposit slip before you send it in with the money order.
Keep your receipt or confirmation after every JPay deposit. One thing to know: if the person you're sending money to owes fines, court costs, or restitution, a percentage of your deposit may be deducted to cover that debt.
