In-Person vs Video Visits at SCI Phoenix: Limits, Rules, and Which to Choose
SCI Phoenix offers both in-person and free video visits, but the limits and rules differ. Here's a breakdown of monthly caps, group sizes, scheduling requirements, and monitoring so you can decide what works best for your situation.
SCI Phoenix offers both in-person and video visits. Either way, you'll schedule through the Pennsylvania DOC Inmate Visitation System (IVS), so that's your starting point.
To use IVS, create an account and sign in through Keystone Login. You'll also need to be on the inmate's authorized visitor list before you can schedule anything. Make sure the information you register with matches what the DOC has on file.
In-person visits are capped at four per month for each inmate, and only one of those can fall on a weekend. Each visit is guaranteed to last at least one hour, with a maximum of four visitors per session.
Video visits have a higher cap: up to six per month, including one weekend visit. You can also have up to six visitors join a single video session. If you're trying to include more family members at once, video is usually the easier option.
IVS limits how far ahead you can book. The maximum is 60 days in advance.
Assume video visits are monitored. Calls with non-attorneys are recorded (audio and video) and can be reviewed later. Calls with attorneys are not recorded.
In-person visits include security screening. Every visitor, regardless of age, must pass through a metal detector and may be searched.
When to Choose
- ✓ Choose in-person if you want the most traditional visit and you’re fine working within the limit of up to four in-person visits per month.
- ✓ Choose in-person if having at least one full hour together matters most, and your group can fit within the four-visitors-per-visit cap.
- ✓ Choose video if travel is difficult and you want more chances to connect, since the cap is up to six video visits per month.
- ✓ Choose video if you need a bigger group on the call, because up to six visitors can join one video visit.
Whichever option you choose, start by setting up your IVS access. Sign in through Keystone Login, create your IVS account, and confirm you're on the inmate's authorized visitor list. For video visits, run a quick tech check beforehand (device, camera, microphone, connection) so you're not troubleshooting when your time starts.
Before locking in a date, check what IVS will actually let you book. Monthly limits can vary based on custody status. Also plan ahead on timing: DOC guidance typically says visits must be scheduled at least two days in advance, but some IVS materials mention a three-day minimum. Verify the earliest available slot in IVS before committing to travel or time off.
- Watch your IVS email - if the facility cancels a scheduled visit, the notice is sent to the email address linked to your IVS account.
- Ask scheduling questions the right way - contact SCI Phoenix directly, or email Central Office at RA-CRDOCINMATEVSS@pa.gov.
