Sending Mail to Someone at Wayne Scott Unit: How the TDCJ Digital Mail System Works

Sending a letter or photos to someone at the Wayne Scott Unit? Here's the key thing to know: personal mail doesn't go directly to the unit anymore. Instead, it goes to TDCJ's Digital Mail Processing Center, where it's scanned and delivered digitally—or printed out for inmates without tablets.

Sending Mail to Someone at Wayne Scott Unit: How the TDCJ Digital Mail System Works

TDCJ moved all units - including Wayne Scott - to a digital mail system on September 6, 2023. Personal letters now route through a central processing center rather than arriving at the prison as paper mail.

Send personal mail to the Digital Mail Processing Center, not the unit itself. Include the inmate's full first and last name plus their TDCJ number so it gets matched correctly. Texas Department of Criminal Justice Inmate's Full First and Last Name + TDCJ Number PO Box 660400 Dallas, TX 75266-0400

Greeting cards and photos go to the same address. Photos are scanned in color, and the inmate can save them to their tablet.

At the processing center, your mail gets sorted, scanned, and uploaded to the inmate's secure tablet. That's where they'll read your letter and view any photos you included.

No tablet? No problem. Inmates without one receive black-and-white printed copies of their scanned mail.

Exceptions

  • Legal mail - send directly to the unit
  • Media mail - send directly to the unit
  • Books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions from verified publishers - send directly to the unit
  • Documents that require an inmate signature - send directly to the unit

Practical Tips

  • Put the inmate’s full first and last name and TDCJ number on everything you send to the Digital Mail Processing Center
  • If you’re sending legal mail, media mail, or books/magazines/subscriptions from verified publishers, plan to mail those directly to the unit instead
  • For anything that needs the inmate’s signature, send it to the unit (not the Digital Mail Processing Center) and double-check the requirements before you mail it

Note: Not sure whether something should go to the processing center or directly to Wayne Scott Unit? Call the unit first to confirm.
