When You Can't Visit: Sedgwick County Jail's Shift Changes, Meal Times, and Holiday Closures

Every visit at Sedgwick County Jail is a video visit, scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Pick a blocked time slot and you're starting over - waiting another full day. Check the shift-change and meal-time blackout periods below before you book.

Shift-change blackout: Visits can't be scheduled from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The jail also recommends avoiding 6:30–7:15 AM and 2:30–3:15 PM for front-lobby services and releases - helpful to know if you're juggling multiple tasks in one trip.

  • Meal time blackout: 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

If you’re bringing a minor: Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, so make sure your schedule lines up before you book the visit.

  1. Pick your day first, then schedule at least 24 hours ahead - all visits are video visits and must be booked a full day in advance, so same-day plans usually won’t work.
  • Don’t schedule a visit during shift change: 2:30 PM–3:30 PM
  • Avoid meal service blackout: 11:30 AM–1:00 PM
  • Avoid meal service blackout: 5:30 PM–7:00 PM
  • If you’re also trying to handle lobby services/releases that day, avoid the recommended shift-change windows: 6:30–7:15 AM and 2:30–3:15 PM

Planning an on-site video visit? Build in extra time around county holidays. On-site visitation closes on observed holidays - including Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after - so double-check before you make the trip.
