How to Send Money to Shawnee County Jail (KS)
Trying to put money on someone's account at Shawnee County Jail? Start here: do not send money through the mail.
Shawnee County Jail does not allow money to be sent through the mail. If you mail cash, a check, or a money order thinking it will land in your loved one’s account, it won’t be processed that way.
Mail that arrives with money inside gets returned to the sender. No return address? The money goes into the facility's general commissary fund, not the inmate's personal account.
The Shawnee County Department of Corrections only accepts specific payment types for inmate account deposits: bank money orders, attorney trust account checks, cashier's checks, government checks, tribal checks, and checks from other correctional facilities. Whatever you use must be made payable to the inmate and include the sender's name and address. Without that information, the deposit won't be credited to the inmate's account.
Note: Cash can be accepted in person for placement on an inmate’s account at the Records window (front lobby). The booking window will also accept cash and other identified payments.
Steps to Follow
- ✓ Use an accepted payment type: bank money order, attorney trust account check, cashier’s check, government check, tribal check, or a check from another correctional facility
- ✓ Make the check or money order payable to the inmate
- ✓ Write the sender’s name and address on the check or money order so it can be deposited to the inmate’s account
- Go to the Records window (front lobby), and bring cash if you want it placed on the inmate’s account.
- Use the booking window if needed, since it will accept cash and other identified payment types.
- ✓ Do not mail money to Shawnee County Jail
- ✓ If money is mailed, it will be returned to the sender
- ✓ If money is mailed with no return address, it goes into the general commissary fund, not the inmate’s personal account
Before buying a money order or requesting a check, confirm the payment types Shawnee County Department of Corrections currently accepts. Double-check how the inmate's name should appear as the payee, and make sure your name and address are written on the check or money order so the deposit can be credited properly.
If you plan to pay in person, verify which window to use (Records in the front lobby or booking) and ask about current procedures for in-person deposits. Worth confirming: mailed money is not accepted. It gets returned if there's a return address, or deposited into the general commissary fund if there isn't.
