Bringing documents for your client? You won't be passing them across the table. Hamilton County Jail doesn't allow attorneys to hand paperwork directly to inmates during visits.

  1. Bring the paperwork with you - have the documents you want your client to receive ready for the visit.
  2. Present the paperwork to the visitation staff member - give it to the HCSO staff member working visitation (not to the inmate).
  3. Let staff make the copies - HCSO staff will copy the paperwork.
  4. Client receives the copies - the copies are provided to the incarcerated individual.

Note: Your client receives copies, not a direct handoff of your original paperwork. Build in a little extra time so staff can handle the copying and delivery process during the visit.

Here's how paperwork works during attorney visits: you give it to the HCSO staff member working visitation, they make copies, and your client gets the copies. Legal mail follows different procedures entirely - don't assume the rules are the same. Pick the method that fits what you're trying to do, and follow that specific process.

  • Decide ahead of time whether you need the documents delivered through an attorney visit or through legal mail procedures
  • Bring paperwork in a form that’s easy for staff to copy (and consider having an extra set on hand, since your client receives copies)
