Visiting Someone in Special Housing at Sing Sing: What's Different
Visiting someone in Special Housing at Sing Sing works differently than general visitation. The main difference? Frequency. People in Special Housing can have one non-legal visit per seven-day period, and it happens during normal visitation hours.
Special Housing visits at Sing Sing operate under their own rules. You can't visit as frequently as you would during regular visitation - the facility limits Special Housing to one non-legal visit within a seven-day period, and it must fall during normal visitation hours.
"Normal visitation hours" at Sing Sing means weekend visiting, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Your Special Housing visit needs to fit inside that window.
Plan for one non-legal visit per seven-day period. Sing Sing schedules these during normal visiting hours - weekend visitation at the facility.
There's also a daily cap: Sing Sing allows a maximum of one non-legal visit per day, based on available space. If you're coordinating with other family members or eyeing a popular day, keep that space limitation in mind when choosing your date.
- ✓ Up to three visitors per visit
- ✓ Plus one child under age five (the child must sit on an adult’s lap)
When counting that "one visit in seven days," use Sing Sing's visitation week - not a standard Monday-to-Sunday calendar. The facility defines each visitation week as Thursday through Wednesday. Your Special Housing visit needs to fall within that Thursday–Wednesday window.
Note: Weekend visitation at Sing Sing runs on a rotating odd/even schedule based on the last number of the incarcerated person’s DIN, so not every weekend will be available for every person.
- Count your week Thursday through Wednesday - that’s the visitation week Sing Sing uses when it limits Special Housing to one non-legal visit within a seven-day period.
- Pick one visit day that fits normal hours - your Special Housing visit still has to take place during normal visitation hours.
- Match the weekend to the DIN schedule - weekend visitation rotates odd/even based on the last digit of the DIN, so confirm you’re planning for the correct weekend.
If you have flexibility, plan ahead. Sing Sing caps non-legal visits at one per day and ties availability to space, so your first-choice day may fill up faster than you expect - especially if multiple people are trying to visit that same day.
- ✓ Keep your group to three visitors, plus one child under five (on an adult’s lap)
- ✓ Coordinate ahead of time so you don’t exceed the per-visit limit
- ✓ Make sure everyone who’s going is on the same plan for who will attend that day
