How Mail Works at Siskiyou County Jail: Address Rules, Inspection, Outgoing Mail, and Indigent Letters
Mail rules might seem nitpicky, but they're often what determines whether your letter arrives quickly or gets sent back. Here's how mail works at Siskiyou County Jail, based on the jail's posted policies.
Siskiyou County Jail does not limit the amount of lawful mail an inmate may send or receive. If the mail follows the jail’s rules, your loved one can keep in touch by letter as often as you both want.
The return address is a make-or-break detail for incoming mail. Every piece must include the sender's name and a return address that's stamped or printed - no address labels. Miss this requirement and your letter gets returned.
All incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband. Legal mail is different - staff open and inspect it with the inmate present.
Mail is opened, inspected, and distributed daily - except Sundays and holidays. If delivery seems delayed, those non-delivery days are usually why.
Inmates shouldn't seal outgoing mail. Staff inspect it for contraband first, then seal the envelope. The exception: legal mail, which inmates can seal themselves.
- ✓ Include the inmate’s name and inmate ID number on outgoing mail.
- ✓ Address it with the addressee’s complete name and complete address.
- ✓ Don’t put toothpaste on the envelope (mail with toothpaste on the envelope will be returned to the inmate).
- ✓ Don’t add drawings on the envelope (mail with drawings on the envelope will be returned to the inmate).
- ✓ Don’t put stickers on the envelope (mail with stickers on the envelope will be returned to the inmate).
- ✓ Don’t use nicknames, monikers, or initials (mail with nicknames/monikers/initials on the envelope will be returned to the inmate).
Indigent inmates can send two letters per week for free. This allowance doesn't cover legal mail.
Note: The jail's published policies don't cover every detail - like whether photos are allowed, what paper types work, or rules for packages and books. If you're sending anything beyond a standard letter, check with the jail first.
