Visitation

Before You Drive to the Unit: A TDCJ Pre-Visit Checklist

A little prep can save you a wasted trip. Use this checklist before heading to a TDCJ unit to confirm the person is actually there, visits are happening, and you have the right ID. Leave anything behind that could get you turned away.

Before hitting the road, confirm the person you're visiting is actually assigned to that unit. Then check the unit's visitation schedule. If visitation has been canceled, even an eligible inmate can't receive visitors. A quick check beats a wasted drive.

  1. Confirm the unit assignment: Verify the inmate is assigned to the unit you plan to visit.
  2. Check the unit visitation schedule: Review the schedule before you leave so you are planning for the right day and time.
  3. Look for cancellations: Make sure visitation has not been canceled for that unit.
  4. Call the unit to confirm: Get final confirmation directly from the unit before you travel.

Call the unit before you leave. Schedules shift and cancellations happen. A quick phone call can save you from showing up after a last-minute change.

Bring photo identification. Not sure if yours qualifies? Check TDCJ's list of acceptable photo IDs before you go. Getting turned away after a long drive is frustrating.

Prohibited Items and Searches

  • Leave your cell phone out of the secure perimeter.
  • Do not bring cash, except coins totaling no more than $35.
  • Expect that your vehicle and you may be searched by unit staff.

Heads up: Cell phones aren't allowed inside the secure perimeter. Visitors and vehicles are subject to search. Leave prohibited items secured before you arrive, or you risk being denied entry.

  2. Mail it to the DRC: Send it to Director’s Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.
  3. Meet the 14 day deadline: Submit the appeal within 14 days of the date on your written notice of removal.
