Smith Unit Visiting Hours, Visit Length, and How Often You Can Visit

Smith Unit holds visits on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. That's the full window the unit is open for visitation - you'll still need to factor in check-in time and any waiting once you arrive.

A regular contact visit is two hours long. The clock starts when both the inmate and the visitor(s) are present for the visit, not when you pull into the parking lot or get in line.

Smith Unit Visiting Hours, Visit Length, and How Often You Can Visit

How often you can visit depends on the inmate's custody level and classification. The baseline TDCJ rule allows one visit per visiting cycle (Monday through the following Sunday). Beyond that, the unit applies frequency rules based on the inmate's specific custody classification - and for some groups, their SAT level - which determines whether visits happen weekly or are limited to a set number per month.

  • G1, J1, J2: one contact visit per week
  • G2, G3, P2, P3, P6, P7 with SAT 3: one contact visit per week
  • G2, G3, P2, P3, P6, P7 with SAT 4 or higher: three contact visits per month

Traveling a long distance? Extended visits may be an option. The Smith Unit warden (or designee) can approve visits up to four hours for visitors traveling more than 250 miles one way, if time and space allow.

Note: Before you travel, confirm the inmate is assigned to the Smith Unit and has visitation privileges. This information is updated daily, and the unit can give you final confirmation before you make the trip.
