What You Can't Bring to a South Carolina DOC Visit: Phones, Smartwatches, Tobacco, and More
Getting ready to visit someone in a South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) facility? Pack light. A few everyday items—especially anything wireless or tobacco-related—can get you stopped at the door.
SCDC does not allow visitors to bring personal wireless communication devices into its institutions. That includes anything designed to communicate wirelessly - devices that can connect through Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, or cellular signals.
This rule catches a lot of people off guard because it's not just about phones. Smartwatches and fitness trackers are prohibited too. If it can pair with another device or send data wirelessly, assume it can't go inside with you.
Policy timeline: SCDC’s ban on personal wireless communication devices has been in effect since February 1, 2016.
The simplest fix? Leave wireless devices behind before you arrive - your phone, smartwatch, fitness tracker, anything that communicates wirelessly. Not sure whether something counts? Play it safe and leave it in the car.
SCDC facilities are completely tobacco-free. That means no tobacco products, no paraphernalia, no lighters - none of it is allowed on agency property. Show up with any of these items and they'll be treated as contraband.
Policy timeline: SCDC has been a tobacco-free environment since January 1, 2008.
Practical Checklist
- ✓ A valid photo ID (whatever you normally use for official check-in)
- ✓ A small wallet with only what you truly need (ID, one payment card, a little cash if you carry it)
- ✓ Basic car keys (avoid extra gadgets on your keychain)
- ✓ Any required paperwork you’ve already been told to bring
- ✓ Cell phones or any other personal wireless communication devices
- ✓ Smartwatches
- ✓ Activity fitness trackers
- ✓ Tobacco products
- ✓ Tobacco-related products, paraphernalia, or lighting devices
Here's something easy to overlook: some car keys and fobs communicate wirelessly. Keep your keychain simple and leave any extra wireless gadgets out of your pockets before heading in. If you're unsure about something, leave it behind.
