What ID Do You Need to Visit Someone at South Carolina DOC (Adults, Kids, and Special Cases)

Children of all ages are allowed to visit inmates in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. That’s true even for very young kids - just make sure you bring the right identification documents for their age.

  • Age 10 and older (in-person): Bring a government-issued photo ID.
  • Age 9 and younger (in-person): Bring a certified long-form birth certificate.

For virtual visits, everyone who wants to participate needs their own account at scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app. Even if you're sitting together during the call, each person must have a separate account.

When creating a virtual visitation account, use the visitor's legal name. It has to match exactly what's on the inmate's approved visiting list - nicknames won't work.

Heads up: For virtual visits, the visitation coordinator will request photo ID for approved visitors age 10 and older. Approved minor children younger than 10 must use a certified long-form birth certificate as their identification.

Bringing a minor to an in-person visit when you're not their parent or legal guardian? You'll need Form 19-118 (

Before any visit happens, the visitor must be on the inmate's approved visiting list. SCDC allows up to 15 approved visitors per inmate.

  1. Get the application from the inmate - The inmate must send you SCDC Form 19-127 (“Request for Visiting Privileges”); it’s the only way to receive the form.
  2. Fill out Form 19-127 completely - Incomplete forms can slow down approval.
  3. Mail the completed form to SCDC - Send it to the Division of Visitation and Inmate Drug Testing, P.O. Box 212969, Columbia, SC 29221.
