The 30-Day Window: What Happens After You Submit the Visitation Application (CR-2152)
After you turn in the CR-2152 visitation application, the next few weeks can feel like a black box. Here's what the 30-day review window typically looks like, how approvals get recorded, and what to do if the answer is no.
Need a blank CR-2152? The facility provides copies to inmates. Your loved one can grab one inside and confirm you're working with the right paperwork before you fill it out and send it back.
- ✓ Fill out every section of the CR-2152 (incomplete forms can stall or stop processing).
- ✓ Attach a current photograph.
- ✓ Use a physical address on the form (a P.O. Box address is not allowed).
- ✓ Return the completed CR-2152 (with photo) to the Deputy Superintendent/Associate Warden in charge of visitation within 30 days.
Once the facility receives your application, the clock starts. You should get a decision within 30 days - that first month is when you'll hear yes or no.
Approval isn't just a verbal yes. Your name gets entered into the offender management system (OMS) in the Visitor conversation (LIML). That entry is what puts you on the approved visitor list - the one staff check when admitting visitors.
Note: No visitor gets in until their application is approved. The only exception: immediate family of newly committed inmates can be added temporarily for up to 60 days from the inmate's intake date.
Here's the thing - the facility notifies the inmate, not you. Your loved one should hear within 30 days whether you're approved. In most cases, you'll find out when they tell you.
- Submit CR-2152 and wait for review - the facility aims to approve or deny the application within 30 days of receipt.
- If approved, your name is recorded in OMS (LIML Visitor) - that’s the system entry that reflects you’re approved to visit.
- The inmate receives the decision - the notification goes to your loved one.
- Confirm plans only after you’re approved - if you haven’t heard anything close to the 30-day mark, ask the inmate to check on the status on their end before you try to schedule a trip.
If your application is denied, the facility must document the reason. The appeal process runs through the inmate - they can challenge the decision through the grievance procedure. If you're denied, talk with your loved one about what reason was listed and whether they want to file a grievance.
Note: If an applicant is initially disapproved by a designated reviewer, the Warden/Superintendent makes the final decision.
A denial isn't always about who you are - sometimes it's the paperwork. CR-2152 requires every section to be completed, and P.O. Boxes aren't allowed as your address. Leave something blank or use the wrong address format, and you'll get denied for a preventable reason. Then you're starting over.
There's a cap on how many people can visit an inmate. All immediate family members who apply can be approved, plus eight additional adults. If you're not immediate family and you're applying later, ask the inmate whether those extra slots are already filled.
Note: You can't visit until your application is approved. The only exception is immediate family of newly committed inmates, who may be added temporarily for up to 60 days from intake.
