Who Can and Can't Be on an Inmate's Visitor List at South Central Corrections Facility (TN)
Visitor rules can get confusing fast, especially the first time around. Here are the key TDOC guidelines that determine who can be approved to visit someone at South Central Corrections Facility.
TDOC allows all immediate family members who apply to be considered for approval on an inmate's visitation list at South Central Corrections Facility. Beyond immediate family, up to eight other adult visitors can also be approved. Wondering if you'll make the list? That immediate-family category matters a lot. It's treated separately from the eight additional adult slots.
Heads up: You generally can't be on more than one offender's visitation list. The exception: immediate family members can appear on multiple lists.
Visitors under 18 need extra supervision. Minors must be accompanied by an approved visitor who is the child's parent or legal guardian. The one exception: if the minor is legally married to the inmate, they don't need accompaniment under this rule.
TDOC has a specific ban tied to certain cases: victims of an offender convicted of a sex offense cannot visit that offender. If you think this might apply to you, assume you won't be approved and confirm with the facility before making plans.
Note: TDOC policy includes additional visitor restrictions beyond the sex-offense victim rule. If your situation is complicated, check the current TDOC visitation policy or call the facility directly before applying.
Even if you fit into a category that can apply, approval isn't automatic. The warden or superintendent can disapprove a visitor if they believe that person could have a harmful influence on the inmate or pose a security threat to the institution. This discretion explains why two people with similar relationships to an inmate sometimes get different outcomes.
- ✓ Disapproval can be based on a determination that the visitor could have a harmful influence on the inmate
- ✓ Disapproval can be based on a determination that the visitor may pose a threat to institutional security
- ✓ These decisions are made by the warden/superintendent under TDOC visitation guidelines
Certain work or service roles can block your approval, even if you know the inmate personally. Current or former TDOC employees, TRICOR employees, contract agency employees, interns, and practicum students aren't approved as visitors unless they're immediate family members. If this describes you, that immediate-family relationship is the key factor that could still get you considered.
TDOC also requires a waiting period for volunteers. If you volunteered with TDOC, you can't apply to visit an offender for 24 months after your volunteer work ends.
Reminder: Victims of an offender convicted of a sex offense will not be permitted to visit that offender, even if they'd otherwise qualify to apply.
