How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at South Middlesex Correctional Center
Before you can visit someone at South Middlesex Correctional Center, you'll need to be on their pre-approved visiting list. That means submitting a visitor application and waiting for approval. Here's how the process works.
You'll need to complete a Visitor Application Form and mail it directly to South Middlesex Correctional Center. This isn't something you can handle at the door - your application has to be reviewed and approved before you're allowed in.
Once the facility processes your application, both you and the inmate will receive notification of the decision. Wait for that confirmation before making any travel plans.
The inmate's visitor list has a cap based on their security level. Maximum and medium security inmates can have up to 8 visitors on their list. Minimum security and pre-release inmates can have up to 10. If the list is full, someone needs to be removed before you can be added.
Exceptions exist, but they're not automatic. Going over the visitor limit requires the inmate to request it and get written approval from the Superintendent.
If your loved one was just committed, there's a short-term option while regular approval is pending. Newly committed inmates can have two named visitors, plus a reasonable number of children, during this temporary window.
This temporary access expires after 40 business days if you haven't been formally approved. Submit your paperwork early to avoid losing visiting privileges.
Pack Application Correctly
- ✓ Complete the Visitor Application Form fully before you mail it to South Middlesex Correctional Center
- ✓ Double-check that you’ve filled in all requested personal details (for example, your name and date of birth)
- ✓ Provide the identification details the application asks for, and make sure they match your government-issued photo ID
- ✓ Review the form one more time before mailing so it doesn’t get delayed for missing or inconsistent information
Not sure how to complete something or where to send it? Call the facility before mailing your application. Fixing a question upfront is much faster than waiting through processing only to hit a snag.
Even after approval, you'll need valid photo ID at check-in. Acceptable forms include a state driver's license, passport, military ID, or official photo ID from a state or federal agency (including certain government employee IDs and Immigration/Customs Enforcement documents). Show up without proper ID and you'll be turned away.
Note: Massachusetts DOC uses passive drug-detecting dogs as part of entrance procedures. If a dog alerts or staff request a search and you refuse to consent, your visit will be denied and you may be barred or prosecuted.
If you've been incarcerated before, expect extra hurdles. Anyone paroled or released from Massachusetts DOC custody needs the Superintendent's permission before visiting a confined inmate. Immediate family members who were recently released may not be eligible for approval until six months after their release.
Non-family members with prior incarcerations can generally apply one year after release. A felony conviction can also affect your chances - the Superintendent may reject your application if they believe it poses a security risk.
If your application is denied, both you and the inmate will be notified. Privileges can also be suspended for rule violations. When that happens, you'll receive a notice explaining the reason, the duration, and how to appeal. Follow those instructions carefully - missing a deadline could cost you your chance to visit.
- Confirm the correct mailing address for visitor applications - You must mail your Visitor Application Form to the specific institution you intend to visit.
- Verify visiting hours before you travel - Schedules can change, so check the current hours before you make the trip.
