At Southwest Regional Jail (Abingdon), video visits are remote, and every session is subject to monitoring and recording. Plan your conversation with that in mind. Also, onsite video visitation sessions are currently suspended due to COVID-19 CDC regulations, so scheduling focuses on remote visits.
You can’t book a remote video visit last-minute here. Visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and you can schedule as far as two weeks (14 days) ahead. Remote video visitation is available seven days a week (Monday through Sunday), so you can choose a day that works for you - then pick an open time within the daily visiting hours.
Remote video visits are offered in three daily time blocks: 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Each remote video visitation session lasts 15 minutes. When you’re picking a time, it helps to treat it like an appointment - be ready to connect at the scheduled start so you don’t lose part of your session.
Cost note: Remote video visitation is billed at $0.33 per minute, and the per-minute charge starts when the connection is made.
Before you can schedule a remote video visit, you’ll need to set up or fund a prepaid account with Smart Communications. You can do that through SmartInmate.com or by calling 1-888-253-5178.
You must be on the inmate’s approved visitor list to conduct a video visitation session. If you’re not approved yet, scheduling won’t get you very far - handle the approved-list step first, then come back to book a time.
You’ll also need a valid photo ID at check-in, and it has to match one of the facility’s acceptable ID types. If your ID isn’t accepted, your visit can be denied even if you successfully scheduled it.
