If OTIS Information Looks Wrong: Who to Contact and the Best Way to Report It
If something on OTIS looks wrong, you have two options for reporting it—and which one you use depends on the problem. Data issues go to one contact; technical glitches go to another.
OTIS is a public lookup tool, not a live database. MDOC explicitly warns that what you see may not reflect the most current location, status, or projected release date. Think of OTIS as a starting point - you'll want to verify anything important through the Michigan Department of Corrections, Michigan Courts, Michigan State Police, or other law enforcement agencies.
OTIS covers people who are (or were) in a Michigan prison, on parole or probation under MDOC supervision, transferred through the Michigan Interstate Compact, or who escaped or absconded. There's a time limit: only individuals under MDOC jurisdiction within the last three years will show up. Older records won't appear.
Think the OTIS information is wrong, outdated, or missing something? Email MDOC's Office of Public Information and Communications at correctionsinfo@michigan.gov. Describe exactly what looks off and what you expected to see - this helps them find the right record and understand the issue.
Tip: OTIS doesn't always show current details. When you email correctionsinfo@michigan.gov, explain clearly what you're seeing and why you believe it's incorrect.
Having technical trouble - can't access OTIS, pages won't load, or information won't display? Email the MDOC Webmaster at mdocwebmaster@michigan.gov. This address handles site access and display problems, not disputes about whether the data itself is accurate.
- ✓ Refresh the page and try the search again
- ✓ Try a different browser (or a private/incognito window)
- ✓ Clear your browser cache/cookies or try a different device
- ✓ Double-check spelling and search fields before assuming the data is wrong
- ✓ If it still won’t load or display properly, email mdocwebmaster@michigan.gov with a short description of what’s happening
Expect some back-and-forth after you report an issue. Save a copy of your email and any replies, including dates and the specific problem you noticed. You'll thank yourself later if you need to follow up.
