How to Send Money to Someone at Stafford Creek: Securus, Western Union, or Money Order?

Washington DOC accepts three methods for sending money to a trust account at Stafford Creek: Securus Debit, Western Union, or a cashier's check/money order. Stick to one of these and follow the formatting rules exactly - your deposit is far less likely to get delayed or credited to the wrong account.

How to Send Money to Someone at Stafford Creek: Securus, Western Union, or Money Order?
  1. Start a Western Union send - You can send online, in person, by phone, or through the mobile app.
  2. Select the correct recipient - Choose “Washington Dept Corrections.”
  3. Enter the DOC codes - Use City Code: WA DOC and State: WA.
  4. Format the Account Number exactly - Use the incarcerated person’s DOC number immediately followed by their last name with no space (example: 123456Doe).
  5. Match the last name to DOC records - The last name has to match the DOC database exactly, even if it differs from the spelling you normally use.

Spelling matters: If the last name doesn't match DOC's records exactly, the deposit can end up in the wrong place. Verify the spelling first, then enter the account number in DOC#LastName format.

Want to keep costs down? Cashier's checks and money orders are the cheapest option according to Washington DOC. Just don't mail cash, personal checks, or stamps - DOC will reject that mail and return it at the incarcerated person's expense. That creates headaches for everyone.

  • Use a cashier’s check or money order if you want the least expensive DOC-listed option
  • Do not send cash
  • Do not send personal checks
  • Do not send stamps
  • Expect rejected items to be returned at the incarcerated person’s expense

Even when you use an official method, deposits can be subject to mandatory deductions under DOC procedures. If your loved one's available balance looks smaller than what you sent, check the DOC "Send Money" page for details on how deductions work and what exemptions apply when funds are designated for specific purposes.

Before sending anything, confirm the incarcerated person's last name exactly as it appears in the Washington DOC database. This matters most for Western Union - the account number combines the DOC number and last name (no space), and the spelling must match DOC records precisely. I'd double-check the format one last time before submitting. Most problems come from a missing digit or typing the name the way you spell it instead of how DOC has it on file.
