Sussex Correctional Institution (SCI) opened in 1931, making it one of Delaware's oldest correctional facilities with nearly a century of operation. SCI houses an all-male population across maximum, medium, and minimum security units. The facility has expanded significantly over time: between April 1997 and April 2000, 760 beds were added, bringing capacity to 1,109. A later expansion increased total capacity to 1,206 beds.
