What to Bring (and What to Leave Home) When Visiting Taylor Correctional Institution
Pack light for your visit to Taylor Correctional Institution. You can bring one vehicle key and one photographic ID - that's it. Have a keyless-entry device? It's only allowed if staff visually inspect and approve it first. Feminine hygiene products are permitted in limited quantities. Bring only what you'll need during the visit and leave everything else in your car or at home.
Note: Keyless-entry devices aren’t allowed unless the duty warden (or designee) visually inspects the device and approves it.
Want to use the vending machines? Bring cash - up to $50 per visitor, regardless of age. Stick to $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills; larger denominations won't work. This money is for snacks and beverages in the visiting area only. Stay within the $50 limit. Anything over counts as unauthorized.
Babies Toddlers
- ✓ No more than five (5) diapers
- ✓ Three (3) clear baby bottles
- ✓ Two (2) toddler sipper cups
- ✓ Three (3) clear plastic jars of sealed (unopened) baby food
Need to bring prescription medication? Keep it in the original container with a readable label showing the medication type, dosage, and your name. Bring only what you'll need during the visit itself. Extra medication beyond that amount may be treated as unauthorized and kept out.
Warning: Do not bring needles or syringes into the facility or leave them anywhere on facility grounds - ever.
Anything not on the approved list - or over the allowed quantity - won't make it inside. Here's the tricky part: staff cannot hold or store your belongings. Not even temporarily. So if you show up with extra items (that aren't contraband), you'll need to find somewhere offsite to secure them. Plan ahead. You don't want to be scrambling at the entrance.
- Pack for “bare minimum” - bring only what’s specifically allowed: one vehicle key, one photo ID, and any permitted items in the permitted amounts.
- Keep quantities within the limits - for example, cash is limited to $50 per visitor and only certain bill sizes are accepted.
- Make a storage plan before you arrive - if you bring extra items that aren’t contraband/illegal, you’ll need to secure them offsite for the duration of the visit.
- Don’t expect staff to hold anything - if it can’t go in with you, it’s on you to store it elsewhere.
Reminder: Department staff cannot hold or store visitor items, even temporarily.
