How to Contact an Inmate at Facility

Before you travel to a unit for any in-person contact, call ahead. It's the simplest way to confirm the person you're trying to see is actually assigned there, still has visitation privileges, and that the schedule hasn't changed or been canceled for the day.

For phone contact, TDCJ requires your telephone number to be registered before you can receive calls from an inmate. You'll register through texasprisonphone.com, and you'll need the inmate's TDCJ ID number to complete it. If you don't have the ID number yet, get that first, then come back to the phone registration step.

How to Contact an Inmate at Facility

Steps to Follow

  • Get the inmate’s TDCJ ID number.
  • Register your telephone number to receive calls at texasprisonphone.com.
  • Call the unit to confirm any current requirements or changes before you travel.

When you call the unit, focus on the things that can stop contact even when you think everything is set. Confirm the inmate is assigned to that unit and eligible for visitation. Ask whether the schedule is running as normal or has been canceled. For phone calls, double-check that you have the correct TDCJ ID number and that your phone registration is active and tied to the right person.

Note: Call the unit right before you leave home. It saves you a long drive for a visit that's been canceled or isn't allowed that day.
