How the TDCJ Visitors List Works: 10 Names, Change Limits, and Appeals

TDCJ visitation starts with one basic gatekeeper: the inmate's approved Visitors List. If you're trying to get added, swapped in, or put back on after a removal, here are the rules that control timing and the appeal process.

In TDCJ, an inmate's Visitors List is the official roster of people approved to visit during authorized hours. It includes basic contact information: names, phone numbers, and physical addresses. The limit is strict. Each inmate can have a maximum of 10 names on their list. If it's already full, someone has to come off before a new person can be added.

If your loved one is in an institutional TDCJ unit, list changes aren't something they can request whenever they want. TDCJ allows inmates to add or delete names only once every six months. That means timing matters if you're waiting to be added or need to be swapped in.

Some settings move faster. For inmates in state jail, Intermediate Sanction Facility (ISF), or Substance Abuse Felony Punishment (SAFP) facilities, Visitors List changes can be requested once every 60 days. Still a limit, but it gives families a quicker path to fix a list that's outdated or full.

  1. Read the removal notice carefully. Your 14-day deadline is counted from the date on the written notice of removal from the unit.
  2. Write your appeal. Keep it clear and focused, and make sure it is in writing.
  3. Mail the appeal to the DRC. Address it to: Director's Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.
  4. Send it within 14 days. Appeals must be submitted within 14 days of the date on the written notice of removal.

Check Status

  • Call the unit for final confirmation of visitation before you travel.
  • Ask the unit to confirm the visit is still on before you make a long drive.
  • Have the inmate’s identifying information ready so staff can look up the right record.
