How to Visit Facility
Visiting someone at a TDCJ unit takes some planning, but knowing the timing rules upfront helps you avoid wasted trips. Here's how to prepare and what to confirm before you travel.
A regular visiting period is two hours long. That time starts once both you and the inmate are present for the visit, not when you arrive at the unit or begin check-in.
Traveling a long distance? You may qualify for an extended visit. If you're driving more than 250 miles one way, the warden (or designee) can approve a visit up to four hours. Approval depends on available time and space, so it's not guaranteed.
Before you commit to the drive, confirm two things: the inmate is assigned to the unit you plan to visit, and they currently have visitation privileges. Call the unit right before you travel for final confirmation. A change in status can cancel a visit without warning.
Note: All visits are electronically monitored, except attorney-client visits. Plan your conversation accordingly.
Steps to Follow
- ✓ Create your own TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler account. TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts for you.
- ✓ Bring photo identification (ID) with you to the visit.
- Confirm the inmate is at the unit: Make sure the inmate is assigned to the unit you plan to visit.
- Check visitation privileges: Verify the inmate has visitation privileges, since restrictions can prevent visits.
- Call for final confirmation before you travel: Contact the unit right before you leave so you do not make the trip for a visit that cannot be accommodated.
If you're traveling more than 250 miles one way, ask about an extended visit. These aren't automatic. The warden (or designee) decides based on available time and space. If approved, you could get up to four hours instead of two.
Note: Visits are electronically monitored (except attorney-client visits). Need to discuss sensitive legal matters? Ask your attorney about arranging an attorney-client visit.
Remote video visits are another option for eligible inmates. You can schedule one visit per month, up to 60 minutes, through the vendor website.
What to Verify
- ✓ Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you plan to visit.
- ✓ Confirm the inmate has visitation privileges.
- ✓ Call the unit for final confirmation before traveling.
- ✓ Confirm the regular visit length (two hours) and when the clock starts (when you and the inmate are present).
- ✓ If you are traveling more than 250 miles one way, ask whether an extended visit can be approved, and whether time and space allow it.
- ✓ If approved, confirm the maximum length for an extended visit (up to four hours).
- ✓ Make sure you have created your own TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler account (staff cannot create one for you).
- ✓ If you are scheduling a remote video visit, confirm the visit limit (once per month) and time limit (up to 60 minutes).
- ✓ Confirm you are booking the remote video visit through the vendor website.
Since visits are electronically monitored (except attorney-client visits), check how that applies to your situation. If you have questions about what's monitored or what exceptions exist, confirm the details with the unit or review the posted visitation rules before you go.
- ✓ Confirm which forms of photo ID are acceptable before you travel, then bring your ID to the visit.
