DWCC's Dress Code for Visitors: What You Can't Wear (And What to Do If You Show Up Wrong)

DWCC is strict about visitor clothing. The fastest way to lose your visit is showing up in something they don't allow. Here are the most common problem items, plus what happens if you arrive dressed wrong.

DWCC enforces a clear dress code for visitation, and a few everyday items are automatic no-gos. The biggest issues: spandex-like bottoms (including leggings and jeggings) and any kind of head covering, even small hair accessories like bows or scarves. Plan your outfit around those two restrictions first, and you'll avoid most problems at the door.

Specific Items

  • Spandex or lycra pants
  • Spandex-like athletic or exercise tights
  • Leotards
  • Jeggings
  • Leggings
  • Clothing with holes, tears, or distressing

Common pitfall: “Jeggings” and “leggings” count as prohibited spandex-like clothing at DWCC, even if they are sold as pants or feel thick enough for everyday wear.

DWCC does not allow hats or head coverings during visitation. That goes beyond just caps. Bows, ribbons, clips, and scarves are all prohibited too. Do a quick check before you leave the house and take those items off.

Tip: Leave hats and hair accessories in the car or at home. Removing them before you reach the front of the line saves time and stress.

If you show up wearing something that doesn't pass, DWCC can offer Department-approved alternative clothing at no cost. It's meant to keep your visit on track instead of turning you away over a clothing issue.

If you borrow clothing, return the items to facility staff when you exit the visitation room. Build that into your plan so you don't accidentally walk out wearing it or leave it behind.

Remember: Loaner clothing is free, but it is still facility property. Return it to staff when you leave the visitation room.

  1. Try on your outfit the day before. Check for spandex-like bottoms (leggings, jeggings, exercise tights), any holes or distressing, and any head coverings or hair accessories you might forget you are wearing.
  2. Choose simple, non-stretchy bottoms. If you are deciding between fitted stretch pants and regular pants, go with the regular pants.
  3. Pack a backup option. Bring an extra, straightforward clothing option in case you second-guess something at the last minute.
  4. Know you still have options if something is flagged. If you show up without appropriate clothing, DWCC can provide Department-approved alternative clothing items at no cost.
  • Avoid leggings, jeggings, and other spandex-like athletic or exercise tights
  • Avoid clothing with holes, tears, or distressing
  • Avoid hats and any head coverings, including bows, ribbons, clips, and scarves
  • Bring plain, easy-to-change layers so you can adjust quickly if needed
