Terrell Unit Visiting Hours and Scheduling: Weekends, Time Limits, and One-Visit-Per-Weekend Rule

Visitation at Terrell Unit happens on weekends only. Hours are Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

TDCJ organizes visitation in weekly "cycles" that run Monday through Sunday - this affects how often someone can receive visits. The state's online visitation status updates once daily on weekdays and multiple times on visitation days, so check again close to when you leave.

Each visit lasts two hours.

That two-hour clock doesn't start when you arrive at the unit - it begins once both you and the inmate are present in the visitation area. Check-in, waiting, and being called can eat into your day, but your actual visit time stays the full two hours.

Here's a big one: each inmate can only receive one visit per weekend. If multiple people show up separately, later visitors will be turned away - even after a long drive. Coordinate ahead of time with everyone on the approved Visitors List so only the planned group makes the trip.

  • Decide who will visit that weekend so no one else gets turned away after the first visit is used
  • Coordinate with everyone on the inmate’s Visitors List (and with the inmate) before anyone starts driving
  • If plans change, communicate quickly so a “backup” visitor doesn’t accidentally arrive after a visit has already happened

Visits can be canceled for more than just scheduling conflicts. Visitation may be temporarily restricted due to rule violations, security concerns, lockdowns, escapes, or disturbances. Health or safety emergencies can pause visits too. When any of this happens, even eligible inmates won't receive visitors until visitation resumes.

  1. Confirm the inmate’s assignment and visitation privileges - Before you travel, verify the inmate is assigned to the unit you plan to visit and has visitation privileges.
  2. Check the latest visitation updates - The state’s visitation information is updated once daily on weekdays and multiple times per day on visitation days, so look for the most recent status.
  3. Call the unit for final confirmation - Do this right before you leave, especially if you’re driving a long distance or visiting during a time when cancellations are more likely.
