The New Mail Policy at Tom Green County Jail: Why Your Letters Go to Longview First
If you're sending a letter to someone at Tom Green County Jail, it won't go directly to San Angelo. Instead, it routes through a processing center in Longview, where it's scanned before reaching your loved one.
All non-legal, non-medical mail must go to this address: Inmate Name, SO#, Tom Green County Jail, PO BOX 591, Longview, Texas 75606. Make sure you write the inmate's name and SO# exactly as it appears in the system - that's how the processing center matches mail to the right person.
At the processing center, your letter gets scanned into the system. Here's the catch: only the front side of each page is scanned. Write on the back, and that content won't make it through. Worse, mail with writing on the back may be returned to you entirely.
Your original letter doesn't go straight to the jail. The processing center holds paper originals for 30 days, then destroys them. This window exists for two reasons: investigators can pull the original if needed, and if a scan doesn't deliver properly, the letter can be re-submitted within that 30-day period.
Heads up: Mail is scanned front side only. Don’t write on the back of pages.
Newspapers work differently. Send them directly to the Tom Green County Detention Center at 4382 N. US HWY 277, San Angelo, TX 76905. Include the inmate's name and SO# so staff can route it correctly.
