Getting approved to visit at Topeka Correctional Facility: background checks, the 20‑person limit, transfers, and the 180‑day rule
Before you can visit someone at Topeka Correctional Facility, you need to be approved and placed on their visitation list. Walk-ins aren't allowed—your application has to clear first.
You can't just show up at Topeka Correctional Facility to visit. Your visitation application has to be approved first, and until it clears, you won't get through the door.
The resident kicks off the process. Once they've earned visiting privileges, they're the ones responsible for getting you the paperwork you need to register.
- The resident gets the request form - they obtain the visitor request form from their unit counselor.
- The resident mails the form to you - they send it to the people they want to add to their visiting list.
- You complete the form and mail it back - the prospective visitor fills it out and returns it to the facility so it can be reviewed for approval.
Every visitor application triggers a criminal background check. The facility runs this check before approving anyone for visits.
Each resident can have up to 20 people on their approved visitor list. If more than 20 people want to visit, the resident has to decide who makes the cut.
Good news if the resident transfers to another Kansas Department of Corrections facility: their approved visitor list goes with them. It stays active unless the resident updates it or there's an administrative reason to change it.
180-day rule: If you’re removed from a visiting list at your own request - or at the resident’s request - you can’t re-apply for visitation for at least 180 days.
