Travis County Dress Code for Visits: What You Can and Can't Wear
Travis County enforces a conservative dress code for onsite visits. Show up in the wrong outfit, and staff can turn you away - no exceptions. Check what you're wearing before you leave home.
Plan for the basics, too. If you’re 17 or older, you’ll need a government-issued photo ID to be allowed in for visitation. And if you’re bringing kids, remember that all minors under 17 must be with a parent or guardian.
Prohibited Items
- ✓ Transparent or see-through clothing of any type
- ✓ Tube tops, halter tops, strapless tops, or backless tops
- ✓ Muscle shirts
- ✓ Spaghetti straps
- ✓ Pajamas
- ✓ Seductive clothing
Wear something see-through or revealing, and you'll be turned away. You lose the visit. Dress more conservatively than you think necessary - officers have full discretion to deny entry.
- Start with a conservative base outfit - Choose clothing that clearly isn’t see-through and doesn’t fall into the banned categories (like tube/halter/strapless/backless tops, muscle shirts, spaghetti straps, or pajamas).
- Use layers to fix borderline outfits - If a top is thin or you’re worried it could look translucent under bright light, add a sweater, jacket, or other cover-up so it’s not see-through.
- Avoid “easy no” items even in hot weather - When it’s warm out, it’s tempting to grab the most minimal top you own, but spaghetti straps, muscle shirts, and strapless styles can get your visit denied.
- Do a quick mirror check before you leave - If the outfit reads as revealing or “seductive,” change now rather than getting turned away at the door.
Reminder for families: All minors under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for visitation, so plan outfits and supervision with that rule in mind.
