How to Register for Visitation at Trenton Correctional Institution Online (SC driver's license)

If you’re 18 or older and you have a valid South Carolina driver’s license, you can register for visitation online starting June 1, 2025. This is the quickest path for most adult visitors, as long as your ID is current and issued by South Carolina.

Heads up: If your driver’s license is from another state, you can’t use the online registration system - you’ll need to submit a paper visitation application instead.

Even if you qualify for online registration, the visitation office may request extra verification for certain relationships before approving you. Gather any supporting documentation early - it'll save you from delays down the road.

How to Register for Visitation at Trenton Correctional Institution Online (SC driver's license)

When to Use Paper

  • You’re an adult who does not have a South Carolina ID or South Carolina driver’s license (for example, you use a passport or a U.S. visa) - use a paper application.
  • You’re an adult with an out-of-state driver’s license - use a paper application.
  • You’re having technical difficulties or you don’t have access to a computer - use a paper application.

If you’re submitting a paper visitation application, mail it to: Division of Visitation and I/M DT, P.O. Box 212969, Columbia, S.C. 29221-2969.

Step By Step Register Online

  • A valid South Carolina driver’s license (online registration is for adults 18+ with a valid S.C. driver’s license)
  • Your name exactly as it appears on your South Carolina driver’s license
  • A reliable way to be reached (email and/or phone), so you don’t miss follow-up questions

Once you submit your request, it goes to the visitation office for review. Name variations or missing details can slow things down. Double-check everything before you hit submit, and watch for any follow-up messages about your application.

Stuck or unsure what to do next? Call the Visitation Inquiry Line at 803-896-1838. Press 1 for questions about the application process or to leave a message.

You can also email questions about the visitation application process to visitation@doc.sc.gov.

Tips to Avoid Delays

  • Enter your name exactly as it appears on your South Carolina driver’s license (including hyphens, suffixes, and spacing)
  • Use your current, valid South Carolina driver’s license information - online registration is limited to adults 18+ with a valid S.C. driver’s license

If your ID doesn't meet the online requirement - say you use a passport or U.S. visa instead of a South Carolina driver's license - plan on the paper process. Gather any supporting documents upfront. Having everything ready avoids the back-and-forth that delays approval.

Give yourself extra time before the visit you're hoping for. If you don't have computer access or keep running into technical issues, skip the frustration - go straight to the paper application instead.
